Sherlock Holmes Fans Get A Spark Of Hope From Susan Downey For The Third Movie

Thirteen years have gone by since the last scene of Sherlock Holmes – A Game of Shadows hinted at the detective’s return, played by Robert Downey Jr. The third movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, has faced many false starts, often interrupted by the busy schedules of its stars.

Recently, rumors about the third film have picked up again. Susan Downey, producer and wife of Robert Downey Jr., shared some news about the project’s status, coinciding with the announcement of a new Prime Video series, Young Sherlock:

“No real updates, but the project is still dear to us. Robert and I talk daily about new ideas for the story. Whenever Robert and Jude get together, which happens a few times a year, we think, ‘How can we bring them back on screen?’ It’s magical. We need a strong reason and a great story, and we have some things in the works.”

The latest news suggests that Dexter Fletcher, known for Rocketman, is set to direct. The cast is expected to feature the beloved duo of Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as John Watson.

The first two films, Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes – A Game of Shadows (2011), grossed 524 and 543 million dollars worldwide. With such success, a third film seemed inevitable but fell into production limbo. Susan Downey’s comments, however, bring new hope for the film’s realization.
